How long does it take to get a student visa for Germany?
I am going on an exchange program. I leave July 31 and I just found out I have to apply for the visa myself. I leave tomorrow and will be out of the country for three weeks (until June 29). Will I have time to get the visa when I get back? (tomorrow I leave for Colombia- not Germany) I am not a US Citizen but permanent legal resident.

Apply today, at the very least look at the documents you need. and try to get an appointment for an interview at the German embassy. It usually takes more than one month to process a student visa, since the documents have to be send to Germany for approval. 3 months total processing time is not unusual, since they will need to give you an appointment for an interview before they do anything with your application at all. This is especially true when you'd need a visa to travel to Germany as a tourist. US citizens can apply in person in Germany, so it is a lot faster for them.
