How to attend a University in Germany as an American Student?
I would like to attend a University in Germany to obtain a Bachelor's degree in German and English, and then later gain a Master's degree in Translating and Interpreting. I'm curious how the University systems in Germany work, especially for International Students. I am under the impression that schooling at many of the Universities have free tuition. If someone could help me understand how the system works? I would also like to make is clear that I am fluent in the German language, next to my Native tongue of English and my fluency in Dutch and Czech as well. If someone could also answer questions like how long the degree programs take to complete and how do I register for the programs? I would like to also make clear that I am only a GED graduate. I would assume that taking some time and attending a community college in the States may help my chances of getting accepted, but I can only assume seeing how I do not know for a fact.

You need to find a study abroad program, either through a university or online. Also, it wouldn't hurt to check out the programs for International Students through the desired German university and apply there directly. (You should check out the second idea first.)

How can I apply for UK adult student Visa?
How can I apply for UK adult student Visa?
I am currently under a student exchange program in Germany. I got accepted in an university in UK and the course start in January. However,my student exchange program ends at January too.Which means I will have no time to go back to my home country for those visa application and I need to finish the Visa application here or it will be too late. Do I need to fill in those visa application form and send it to the UK embassy? If yes, which one?

You need to apply at the British embassy in Berlin
2 :
The British Embassy in Germany has outsourced the visa application process to a commercial partner, WorldBridge. You need to fill the application form online and must make the payment of the visa fee (€277) online unless you apply in Düsseldorf where you also can pay in cash. After that you will need to get an appointment to have your biometrics and fingerprints taken. Those appointments can be made at the WorldBridge Visa Application Centres in Berlin, Düsseldorf, or Munich. After having done the biometrics at Berlin or Munich you will need to mail the printed out application form together with your supporting documents to the WorldBridge Visa Application Centre in Düsseldorf, in order to be forwarded in bulk to the Border Agency Office at the U.K. Consulate General in Düsseldorf, the only place in Germany where visa decision are made. If you have gotten your appointment in Düsseldorf you can also drop off your application package at the application centre. The application can be lodged up to 3 months prior to the proposed travel date; do it as early as possible since your details might be referred to the U.K. Border Agency office in your home country which may take quire a while. To get further details just chose Germany on the attached website. https://www.visainfoservices.com/Pages/Welcome.aspx ..

Is theatre big in Germany? What are popular musicals there?
Hey there! Next year, I will be a foreign exchange student to Germany! I am VERY into theatre here in America, it is my life. I was jusg wondering if lots of kids do theatre over there. One of my favorite musicals is Spring Awakening, and I know that it is set in Germany. Do the community theatres in Germany perform that alot? What are popular musicals that they do? Thanks!

Um, Spring Awakening is only known as the novel/drama to students at school (I think we all hated it *lol*) and as a normal theater play, but not as a musical. Still, we have many musicals - the big ones - here, all put on by one company named Stage Entertainment. There are also tour productions that aren't Stage produced. Smaller, local theaters may sometimes have musicals as well, but mostly it's normal plays without music in them. Depending on the city you're staying in (or close to), you'll find classic plays as well as modern versions of classics, or new stories. As for the musical here - we have, for example, Tarzan, Wicked, We Will Rock You, Sister Act, and The Lion King, as well as some German musicals, such as Tanz der Vampire, Hinterm Horizont and Ich war noch niemals in New York (the two last ones with music from famous German artists, similar to Mamma Mia). They're all in German, though, of course ;)

Can I change my Schengen Visit Visa into Student Residence Visa?
I got a Swiss Schengen Visit Visa and I will travel soon to visit Switzerland. Also I will visit my friends in Germany and I'm planning to visit a university there. In case I got my admission approved in that university, can I stay in Germany and change my Schengen Visit Visa into Student Residence Visa, instead of traveling out from Germany and then obtain a brand new Schengen Visa to re-enter Germany as a residence Student?

Yes, you may apply for a residence permit in Germany. In general long-stay national visa issued by German Embassies are only valid for three months with the demand to apply for a resident permit after arrival at Germany. German Embassies and Consulates can only issue visa for 3 months since the authority to grant a longer stay is with the German States based on Federal Law. Provided you hold a visa valid for 90 days you need to contact the town-hall of the city you plan to reside in and obtain the residence permit through the foreigners office [Ausländeramt]..

Almost all exchange students going to Germany attend a gymnasium -- the highest of the three levels of secondary schools.
2 :
You would be in Gymnasium. The upper level of the German school system is split into three levels starting in fifth grade: Gymnasium (the highest), Realshule (the middle schoo, for average kids), and Hauptshule, the lowest-level school. Gymnasium is the only school that gives kids the degree they need for university, and also takes the most years to complete, going up to grade 13 (just bit of background info for you). Exchange students tend to be placed in Gymnasium.

Student exchange - Switzerland, Germany or Austria?
Student exchange - Switzerland, Germany or Austria?
I'm 15 and I'm from Australia, so I'm used to warm weather (around 20c in winter, and over 30c in summer) and I want to go on student exchange to experience the different culture, language, sights, weather etc. I am looking at going for 5 months, leaving in August/ September, with SEA. I want to advance my German (learn it at school - Bavarian) and experience cold weather and cobblestoned streets, with those walk up buildings, as well as a Traditional White Christmas. Where should I go to fulfill these desires?

I spent a year in Germany and loved it. I spent 4 months in Austria and it was also great. I hear that Switzerland is kind of expensive. If you live in the Bavaria area of Germany, you will most definitely get all of that and more!

What to bring to Germany in the summertime?
What to bring to Germany in the summertime?
I am going to Germany as an exchange student for about a month in June. What sort of things should I bring? Especially speaking clothing wise. =) Thanks in advance!

Cool clothes is guess
2 :
warm jacket, just in case. german weather can be a pfiffikus, even in summer
3 :
Bring clothes with which to layer, especially if you are going to be in any mountain towns (in Bavaria, for instance). I would recommend a small collection of tank tops, t-shirts, light sweaters (cardigans) and a light jacket. For pants, etc. you will def need jeans and maybe one pair of shorts, but it won't always be hot enough for shorts. You may want leggings to wear with a dress or skirt, if you are going out in the evening. Basically, in some areas it gets chilly at night and early in the morning, but is warm in the afternoon. Oh, and I'd advise against flip-flops, but sandals are okay. One pair of sneakers would be good, too. Also don't take too much! Shopping in Germany is fun, so leave room so you can buy clothes there and bring them back. Also don't take any appliances like hair dryers -- they won't work, even with a converter. Your cell phone won't work unless you get an international SIM card. You can take things like laptops and alarm clocks, but only if you have the right converters for them. Take enough memory cards for your digital camera to store lots of pictures at a time, in case you don't have a computer handy to transfer them to. Leave your laptop at home if you can. Oh, and if you are staying with a host family, bring a nice gift! It should be something inherently cultural to where you are coming from... if you're from the US, it can be generically American, or specific to your state/region. Maybe ask the host family first, but American liquor is always a hit, as are cigarettes. For any host siblings who are teenagers, ask their music taste and maybe bring a CD. Good luck! You have plenty of time to plan, and that's good :D
4 :
The previous answer gave you a lot of good advice, but let me add something very important: It can rain a lot in Germany, so a Goretex (or similar) waterproof jacket is the first thing you should take. Don't bother with water resistant, get waterproof!!! Also shoes. They make waterproof shoes now that aren't made of rubber. They have Goretex lining and a coating that keeps your feet nice and dry. And take an umbrella. You might be lucky and have good weather, but the June I spent there was cool, gray, and rainy every day for about a month.

I think that good german chocolate would be a very good and cheap idea. I always bring my friends Beerstein when I go to Germany. You could also bring home simple things like shot glasses or postcards. hope this helps Raphael Calabri http://youngglobalcitizen.com
2 :
German cookies. BMW, Porsche, Mercedes keychains (from car dealers). Made in Germany chocolate bars. FC Bayern scarves (or other teams).
3 :
How about a cuckoo clock?
4 :
You can get them souvenirs like: small Brandenbur Tor replicas; the berlinese bears (if you are in Berlin); I saw small portions of the Berliner Mauer being sold in sourvenir shops in the Unter Der Linden, they are very small and not expensive, like 4 euros.....
5 :
You can take back what is allowed for the re-entry into the USA. You can't take any fruits, plants, meats but other things such as clothes, sweets , books, music are o.k. You also cannot take any Nazi memorabilia whith you or anything Nazi-related. Hope, you had fun!

I bet you are excited about going back home, but I will have to tell you, Germany is just beautiful. I've been to Germany a lot of times in the last 6 years. I always brought back, chocolates (which are out of this world), beer, shoes, clothing, or anything else I could think of. You just can't bring back plants, or open food, fruits, etc. I was over in Germany to be with my fiance when he wasn't here in Texas with me. I can tell you we kept the path going. LOL Anyway, we are married now and living in Texas. Have a safe trip back home.

I always think that chocolate is the best way to go. It's inexpensive, easy to pack and you know that people will appreciate it. Always fun are the "giant" bars of Milka that are not available in the US. You may also consider bringing back something fun with German written on it. These aren't easy to find, but I once got my dad a man's bbq apron that made it look like you are wearing lederhosen. Hillarious! Have a safe trip home! Gute Reise!
8 :
Take some books about the city and region you have been staying.
9 :
You can take back nutcrackers and smokers! Also the big thing would be beer-steins!! Everyone likes beer-steins!
10 :
buy a beer glass , weisswurst(white sausages :)
11 :
You can take anything but firearms, meat or produce. Bring back chocolate-- everyone goes nuts for German chocolate.

What to do with German exchange student?
I'm 16 and a junior in High school, next month my family is hosting an exchange student from Germany. I live in Salt Lake City, what are some thing my family I should take him to? We are going to a Jazz game and I know there is a pizza party planned at a local pizza place? What do German teens do for fun? And how different will it be here? Thanks in advanced

I have been a host parent for 4 students. From Germany, Switzerland, Belgium and Norway. In all but one, they have researched the area and have a good idea what they want to see. But the biggest thing is to see what kids in Salt Lake City do. They will make their own friends, and just let them hang with you and your friends. Other people will invite them places. Concerts, ballgames, just try to let them experience as much as they can while they are here.
2 :
I'm German/American. Most Germans have to take English in school, so I'm sure you won't have a problem communicating. When it comes to what this student's life is like, compared to yours depends on whether he is from the country or city. German teens are usual very sociable & love to party. A lot of them do enjoy Jazz music, so he'll probably like that. When my cousins come for visits they love to do things that they don't get to do in Germany. We live by the ocean, so they really love that. Most love to swim & go camping. They also like to see sports, like baseball & football. Their bowling is different than ours, so they have fun doing that too. Pizza is great; theirs tastes different than ours. They like our ice cream too. German schools are very advanced, so he will probably catch on quite fast. I'm sure that this will be a nice experience for all of you. Have fun!
3 :
Anything involving beer or booze, and I'm sure it'll be fine.
4 :
He'll probably enjoy the pizza, it's a popular dish in Germany also. You might be a bit surprised at some of the things they put on their pizza, incidentally. Be open-minded! German teens do pretty much the same things as every other Westernised teenagers, they play sports, use Facebook, go to the cinema, etc. I suggest NOT going to the cinema for the first couple of weeks, because it's going to be quite an adjustment for him/her to get used to hearing English all the time, and this is exhausting - you'll find the same when you go to Germany. It might be an idea to get DVDs instead, and watch films with subtitles switched on, English is definitely available on most DVDs (for the hard of hearing) and German is often available.

Question about getting a visa in Germany for an American citizen?
Question about getting a visa in Germany for an American citizen?
Do you HAVE to have $35,000 in the bank in order to get a residency/student visa in Germany (are there any ways around that?), and do you HAVE to be accepted to the school PRIOR to obtaining the visa if you get a student visa? (We wanted to go over to Germany and then pick out a school to attend). Any suggestions on either of there topics would be appreciated.

hi, You must supply evidence that sufficient funds per months or a sum covering at least one year's study are available (e.g. own funds) equal to the highest German student loan level. Adequate financial means implies that you are in the position to secure your living expenses for the period of studies in Germany. This means that the you have to prove (at the time of application for a student visa) that you have a monthly allowance of 580 Euro, for the first twelve months of the studies, at your disposal.

I am an American student that will spend next year studying in Germany. Do's and dont's?!?
I go to the University of Iowa and will be studying in Lueneburg, Germany near Hamburg. I heard that I will get laughed at if I wear the same clothes there as I do here. Is that true?! Any suggestions on how to change my style? Thanks everyone!

What I tell the international kids coming over here -- don't bring many clothes -- buy them here. Do the opposite in Germany. Don't buy a wardrobe before you go -- wait and see what everyone else does. Then go find a German girl or two to take you shopping! H & M would be a good place! Stylish and reasonable prices. In general, as a guy, you'll find clothes much tighter than here (do NOT run around with 3" of underwear hanging out and your pants around your knees!). Here's the H&M website for Germany -- men's clothes. http://shop.hm.com/de/deptstart?dept=HERR&shoptype=S Good luck and have fun!

How do I text someone that's from Germany?
I'm in the United States, and there's a foreign exchange student from Germany that I like. I wanted to get her cell phone number if she has one. How would I text her, and would it cost extra? My carrier is Sprint by the way.

as long as she isn't in germany, it won't cost any more than a text message to anyone else in america would
2 :
If she is using roaming: All you need to do is add +49 (germany country code) infront of her local german number mobile number (if she is using roaming). And yes it will cost you more, you will need to contact sprint and find out how much it will be on your current plan. If she isnt using roaming Then just sms her like anyone else and it wont cost anymore.

I don't think it's weird... I have two friends who dated exchange students (who also were from Germany, lol), and the relationship went fine. One of my friends just made sure they didn't get too attached so the farewell would go smoothly, and my other friend is still in a long-distance relationship. If you like her, go for it!! And it's a nice chance to familiarize yourself to another culture (^_^)

Student Visa- Germany?
Student Visa- Germany?
Can foreign students work on a student visa? I've heard that international students are allowed to work 90 days a year, but I've also heard that it's fine to work up to 19.5 hours a week. Is the latter condition just applicable for those 3 months or can students work up to 19.5 hours a week, throughout the year? Also, can people travel to and fro schengen countries on a student visa?
Immigration - 1 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
If you are a student from a European Union or European Economic Area country you can work as long as you like. Non-EU students who require a visa must get an approval by the German Employment Agency [Arbeitsagentur] to either work full time during term breaks for a total of 90 days per year or to work half days [19.5 hours per week] for a total of 180 days per year. This does not apply to college or language school students who are not authorized to work at all. http://www.internationale-studierende.de/en/during_your_studies/jobbing/allowed_to_work/ .. http://www.auswaertiges-amt.de/diplo/en/Infoservice/FAQ/Studium/07-ArbeitserlaubnisD.html .. The student visa is only issued for the initial entry to Germany with a validation of 90 days. Foreign students must get registered and must apply for a temporary residence permit at the town-hall of the place of their university respectively of the place in which they plan to reside during their studies. The residence permit issued by Germany serves as visa waiver to the other 24 Schengen countries for a stay of up to 90 days within a 6 months period; however this is moreless a theoretical requirement since nobody can control it. There are no immigration/passport controls on internal travel between Schengen countries. http://www.auswaertiges-amt.de/diplo/en/Infoservice/FAQ/VisumFuerD/15-Schengenstaaten.html ..

What's the best way for broke students to travel Germany in January?
I would consider camping and cycling, but the only time me and my friends are able to go to Germany is during the January holidays and I gather it gets rather... cold. We're looking to see as many places as possible, as in we want to start off in Germany and make our way North and West, but we're all college students and pretty broke. Any ideas for travel and accommodation? Normally I would Spinnie, but its in January so I have to ask you, are you mad?

If you're going up north, visit Rostock on the Baltic Sea. They have a student hostel in Warnemuende (seaport part of town) that is very affordable. Besides that, don't rent a car. Just take busses and trains. For more information on Rostock, Germany. www.visit-rostock-germany.com

I'm an exchange student in Germany for 3 three months, and for Christmas, I would like to give my host family some American food/candy/or anything cool that can't be found here in Germany. My mom is sending a box of stuff and I need to tell her what to bring. Any ideas?

If your mom is on the east coast of the US, ask for saltwater taffy. :9
3 :
They probably have limited access to most sweets as there are plenty of Americans(Air Bases in Germany. However you can't get more American than Hershey and there will be lots of Hershey products they will never have tried.
4 :
I couldn't say what is or is not available in Germany. I do know that on a recent trip to Greece, I brought a bag of Swedish Fish candies with me & they had no idea what they were, but I would assume they probably DO have THOSE in Germany. However, I found this discussion on what foods Americans & Canadians miss while living in Germany that might help you: http://www.toytowngermany.com/lofi/index.php/t85403.html
5 :
Reese's Peanut Butter Cups are a hit with my German friends. I get lots of request for them.

How do I switch home computers for my foreign exchange student's iPod?
My foreign student is from Germany and she has an 8g Nano iPod, 3rd generation. How can I move all her songs to my computer without deleting them and having to download them again, while adding new songs? How do I make my computer the primary source for her iPod?

You have to connect the ipod to the computer. There should be an options thing that pops up. you need to authorize using the ipod with this computer. After that if this student you have downloaded all of her music from itunes there should be an option of syncing the ipods music with your computer. Look around your itunes for syncing options when her ipod is plugged in the computer. It will tell you that you can only do with with about 5 ipods. But just look around for syncing options and you'll probably be able to work that out.

You can try this easy way, just need an ipod to pc transfer. THe tool can help you backup iPod video/audio files to computer, you don’t need to worry about losing anything. And if you need, u can drag the music into your itunes. More information: http://www.aiseesoft.com/ipod-to-computer-transfer.html here is how to use it: first you need download the iPod to Computer Transfer. then plug your iPod to your computer and the iPod to Compouter Transfer can automatically find it. your just need to pick up all the songs you need to transfer and click transfer button. then you have your iPod songs on your computer. Have a good day!

My exchange student from Germany and I have become very close. Now she has returned to Germany, and she has asked for me to give her all of the hot American party songs on a CD. However, I don't think this is possible, because aren't the formats different in Europe?

DVD players there are different regions. CDs are the same. I have a friend in Romania and one in England and the three of us send CDs back and forth on occasion. The only potential problem with sending her a CD would be customs on her end. I've had most of my packages opened and mangled by Romanian customs officials. But, if that's all you're sending is music, you could just e-mail or IM the FILES to her. That's the fastest, easiest, most affordable way. If you have them stored online, you could also give her permission to access them there and save yourself the upload time.

You can do this independently of your school. Go to afs.org and request a catalog of countries. Some places have certain requirements you have to meet (language, age, etc.) but most are open to any high school student. You can also pick between summer, semester, and year-long programs. Once you decide where you want to go, you'll meet with your local office and fill out an application. Warning: It's extremely long. Luckily, from what I saw, they seem to accept almost everyone who applies. The program is expensive (about $10,000 for a year), but I think they do offer scholarships to families who can demonstrate financial need. Be sure to check with your school counselor before you leave about how your overseas credits will transfer. I made that mistake, and it set me back a grade in school! Good luck :)
2 :
Contact your school/university and ask. Since they have exchange students there, there are probably some mutual programme.

I think you should consider the type of things a German student would do for fun but I think you should focus on showing them around your home. If you were in germany you wouldn't want to spend the whole time doing American things would you? Show him what people in the U. S. do and have fun!!
2 :
Sam gave a great answer. A German teen will be very interested in what you like to do. Other things that could interest him are the natural wonders in your area. Take him into the mountains to see the canyons. Take him to Antelope Island State Park and to see the Great Salt lake. Germany is very built up, so he will probably be interested in the wilderness in your area. He will be interested in the Mormon Temple and a walking tour of downtown, might be a fun thing to do to.

Would I be considered an International Student studying in Germany with a French Citizenship?
I am currently in the middle of getting a French citizenship. and right now I live in Canada and am interested in going to university in Germany. Now seeing as germany is part of the EU (along with France), would I pay tuition as an international student or regular student? Thanks! Sorry, I haven't actually found a university yet — I'm wondering about that too. But I know I want to study in Germany. I just have to find the right school. You'd probably need a student visa though, depending on where you're coming from.

You are regarded as a 'home' student based on your tax residency not your passport. There are plenty of 'home' students in Germany that do not hold an EU citizenship. The advantage of the French passport will be that you will not need a student visa. By the way, to go to university in Germany you will need excellent German but I presume you know that already.
